Senior Veterinary Surgeon, Grimsby
12 month fixed term contract, full time
We are one of the UK’s leading rehoming organisations for animals. We support sick, injured and homeless pets and care for more than 40,000 animals every year through our rehoming, veterinary and education programmes.
What is the role?
Are you looking for the opportunity to work in a culture of active encouragement to pursue your interests and of non-blame, with managers who are visible and approachable, and a team that enjoys working together? Are you looking for a great work/life balance with support from an excellent, well-structured organisation?
Blue Cross hospitals provide veterinary treatment for animals belonging to those people whose financial circumstances do not allow them to afford private veterinary fees. The range of work carried out is very similar to that in private practice, We pride ourselves on offering an excellent level of care to our patients and their owners. We offer a high-quality working environment with facilities including digital X-Ray, ultrasound, endoscopy, multiparameter anaesthetic monitors and infusion pumps. Many of our vets hold certificates or have special interests and are more than happy to share their knowledge and help you develop your clinical skills.
Our hospitals see a high caseload of emergency and critical care cases, both surgical and medical, so we are looking for someone with a good knowledge of small animal medicine in those areas.
We are looking for a vet with a caring attitude to animals and owners and will be able to communicate well with colleagues and clients. This is the role for a Senior Veterinary Surgeon to line manage and support a team of 11 veterinary surgeons together with another Senior vet. With a team of this size it is desirable that you have line management experience. You will be supported by the chief vet with whom you will be working closely.
As a team we hold regular clinical governance discussions lead by our clinical lead vets. The Blue Cross has developed an award-winning set of clinical guidelines to assist our vets in pragmatic decision making, where patient welfare is a priority. High standards are important to us but so is the ability to discuss openly where lessons have been learnt, within a safe, non-judgmental environment.
We recognise that we work within a profession where compassion fatigue is a risk to us all. Our regular reflective rounds, providing an environment for the team to get together and process difficult events, are just one of the ways in which we promote and support mental well-being.
The role will be based at our Grimsby hospital on a shared OOH rota for evening and weekend shifts with time off in lieu given like for like.
