Veterinary Nurse, Hammersmith animal hospital
Permanent, full time

We are one of the UK’s leading rehoming organisations for animals. We support sick, injured and homeless pets and care for more than 40,000 animals every year through our rehoming, veterinary and education programmes.

What is the role?
How do you feel when you can’t treat a pet because of financial constraints and owner circumstances? Have you been considering a move into charity, and maybe you’re looking for that warm, fuzzy feeling of helping those who are really in need? Would you prefer to talk donations instead of bills?

We would like to recruit an outstanding registered Veterinary Nurse on a permanent basis to join our small but perfectly formed team. We are a charity, who pride ourselves on delivering excellent patient and client care. The successful candidate needs to have strong nursing skills and be able to hit the ground running. We’re not about micromanagement, it’s not fun for anyone, so you will need to work under your own initiative to get the job done. Of course, your manager will be there to support you when needed and we will ensure that you receive opportunities to develop and train.

We are looking for a good all-rounder who can have a great rapport with clients during nurse clinics, stay cool, calm and collected during difficult anaesthetics, and assist the vets in clinic to keep everything running smoothly. It would be even better if you have a specific interest that you are already or would like to pursue! We have a varied caseload although there is less medical nursing as our critical patients are transferred to our 24-hour hospital in Victoria for round the clock care. However, we do offer the opportunity to do job swaps with Victoria to keep these nursing skills up.

We have a dedicated reception team so no regular shift on reception, just cover for holidays and sickness. We have some lovely clients, they’ll flag you down in reception just to ask how you are, and they bring chocolate. Lots of chocolate (don’t worry though, our person requirement doesn’t include ‘must love biscuits’).

Volunteers are integral to our charity, and we need our wonderful employees to be willing to train them! It takes a bit of time and effort, but you’ll soon find you turn your back and that prep room that looked like a bomb had hit it has been magically tidied up, disinfected, surgical kits cleaned and packed.

Unashamedly being cliché, our team really is like a family. Sometimes we have to spend time together when we’d rather be doing something else, we don’t always agree, but we always support each other and care about what our teammates are going through. Both at work and personally.

We pride ourselves on our no blame culture and run monthly reflective rounds to help process difficult events and promote mental well-being. We also hold regular informal catch ups between line reports and their managers, it’s not about how you’re performing, it’s about how you are.

What is required?
We are looking for people with the following:
• Fully qualified Veterinary Nurse
• Registered with RCVS
• Confident in all aspects of veterinary nursing
• Demonstrable customer service skills

It would also be great if you had:
• Provision of nursing clinics
• Laboratory skills
• Use of computerised records
