Veterinary Surgeon, Hammersmith and Merton animal hospitals, London
Permanent, full time
We are one of the UK’s leading rehoming organisations for animals. We support sick, injured and homeless pets and care for more than 40,000 animals every year through our rehoming, veterinary and education programmes.
What is the role?
Are you looking for the opportunity to work in a no blame culture, active encouragement to pursue your interests, managers who are visible and approachable, and a team that enjoys working together?
Blue Cross hospitals provide veterinary treatment for animals belonging to those people whose financial circumstances do not allow them to afford private veterinary fees. The range of work carried out is similar to that in private practice, but although we are a charity, we pride ourselves on offering an excellent level of care to our patients and their owners. We offer a high-quality working environment with facilities including digital X-Ray, ultrasound, endoscopy, multiparameter anaesthetic monitors and infusion pumps. Many of our vets hold certificates or have special interests and are more than happy to share their knowledge and help you develop your clinical skills.
We hold regular clinical governance discussions and have developed an award-winning set of clinical guidelines to assist our vets in pragmatic decision making, where patient welfare is a priority. High standards are important to us but so is the ability to discuss openly where lessons have been learnt, within a safe, non-judgmental environment. We recognise that we work within a profession where compassion fatigue is a risk to us all. Our regular reflective rounds, providing an environment for the team to get together and process difficult events, are just one of the ways in which we promote and support mental well-being.
We are looking for a RCVS registered Veterinary Surgeon with a caring attitude to animals and owners and will be able to communicate well with colleagues and clients. Our hospitals see a high caseload of emergency and critical care cases, both surgical and medical, so it is desirable that you have some small animal experience.
This role will be mainly based at our Merton and Hammersmith hospitals, with some shifts at our flagship hospital in Victoria.
The hours are predominantly 9-5, with a paid lunch break, but our vets take part in a shared OOH rota with an average of 1 evening shift every 2 weeks and 1 weekend day every 5 weeks (with time off in lieu). Overnight inpatient care is provided by a dedicated night team at our Victoria hospital.
What is required?
We are looking for people with the following:
• Member of Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
It would also be great if you had:
• UK small animal or mixed practice experience
• UK driving licence
